Sometimes you just need a husband and wife getaway alone to refresh and focus on one another. Matt and I took a quick getaway and visited Newport, Rhode Island for the first time. A beautiful, quaint little town surrounded by water, shops and mansions.
On our way we made an unplanned it stop at the Pez Factory. It was a cute, little shop and museum with all things Pez.
We stayed at a beautiful hotel, Gurney's Newport Resort, on Goat Island (and yes, there were goats). We ate breakfast in the hotel both mornings and the Eggs Benedict was so good, I had it both days!
We toured historical mansions, starting with the The Breakers (1895), home to the Vanderbilt's and the The Marble House (1888). It's an understatement to say the detail was astonishing, especially when you look at the time frames these homes were established.
Despite the rain, we were able to walk along main street, enjoy some of the shops and surroundings.
The morning we left we hiked the Cliff Walk. It's one of the top attractions in Newport and a 3.5 mile walk along the shoreline and the mansions. Some parts of the walk were very rugged, climbing rocks and such, but it was well worth the views. When we were finished we had to find a bus to take back which was an adventure in itself.
We enjoyed some great food (The Red Parrot and Benjamin's Restaurant and Raw Bar) and delicious ice cream (Kilwin's) but more importantly, the much needed time for just the two of us!
