On October 29, 2012 New York was pounded by Hurricane Sandy. It affected 24 states causing severe damage in New York. It was unprecedented. Many evacuations were put into affect, some close to home. The schools were closed for several days to over a week. The subways and other MTA transit systems were at a standstill. Airports suspended travel and tunnels and bridges were closed. Many were without power for several weeks. Hurricane Sandy flooded streets, tunnels and subway lines. The Broadway Theatre District was closed for days. Beaches and landscapes changed forever. The lines for gas were like nothing I have ever seen before and gas rationing was enforced. The storm severely damaged or destroyed around 100,000 homes on Long Island with more than 2,000 homes deemed inhabitable.
As for our experience with this Super Storm, we were lucky. We huddled up in the den the night it was supposed to hit, you were cuddled in your sleeping bags surrounded by stuffed animals. We lost power for 2 days and TV/Phone for 4 days. You were out of school for the week. Aside from trees being down, there was very little damage in our local area.

Damage in the US was estimated at over $74 billion, an estimated $42 billion in New York alone. A live telethon was held on November 2 that featured rock and pop stars such as Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi, Christina Aguilera and Billy Joel. It raised over $23 million dollars for the American Red Cross hurricane relief efforts. This was storm we will never forget.
